Everyone knows the John Moore Services jingle: “Call John, get Moore, 7-3-oh, 25, 25.” The man behind the jingle idea is Donald Valentine. When he recommended that John Moore Services develop a catchy tune to market its services he was just the marketing man. Today he owns the company, and his business does a lot more than plumbing, heating and cooling.[caption id="attachment_28992" align="alignleft" width="300"] Donald Valentine with daughters Hannah and Claire – Courtesy John Moore Services[/caption]
He knew from the beginning that he was part of something special. As a homeowner, Valentine knows how important it is to trust the people you bring into your home. He wanted to expand on the superior services John Moore already offered, and now, along with plumbing and air conditioning, John Moore offers heating, electrical, carpet cleaning, lawn treatment, pest control, remodeling, roof repair and water damage repair. All with the same level of expertise that drew him to the business in the first place.
“In the beginning we had 35 employees, and now we have more than 400,” Valentine said.
Valentine is not a plumber, nor is he an A/C technician, yet he owns one of the nation’s largest home services companies. When he became an owner of John Moore Services he said he had a vision for changing the industry.
“I thought there was an opportunity to change an industry, and build it around the customer. God has blessed us since then,” he said. He says when people want the best Houston plumber they call John Moore. When they want the best air conditioning service they call John Moore.
“I believe John Moore is the best home service company in the Houston area. No one cares more about their people and their customers than John Moore,” Valentine said.
Valentine had a long career in marketing for some of the nation’s biggest companies. After earning his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s in Business Administration at Texas A&M University he was an executive for numerous major corporations. General Foods, Birds Eye, Dr. Pepper, Southwest Airlines and Continental Airlines are just a few of the names on his resume.[caption id="attachment_28990" align="alignright" width="300"] Covering Katy’s readers special number to reach John Moore Services is 713-597-8822.[/caption]
“Herb Kelleher (former CEO of Southwest Airlines) told me something: ‘If you treat your people right, it cannot help but translate into better customer service,’” Valentine said. “I think he may be the only CEO who understands that the success of a business comes down to customer services.”
At John Moore Services, trust is built by first hiring the right people, then training them properly while also making them feel like part of the family. They want employees who enjoy working for John Moore Services.
“We have a process and a system for hiring and training our employees,” Valentine said.
Company founder John Moore retired in 1997, and Moore’s son and daughter took over the business. Valentine came on board in 1998 as a minority owner. By 2004 he was the sole owner of the 50-year-old company.
The company also remains a family business. “I was blessed to have my daughter Hannah, 27, join us last year, and her twin sister Claire is joining us in August,” Valentine said.
He also has a daughter, Grace, 25, who is a teacher. His son Jack, 22, is in the U.S. Air Force.
As the business expands, Hannah is focused on addressing the company’s future needs, now. The biggest problem in the trades is a shortage of good people. Over the years, young people have been moving away from trade jobs in favor of high-tech positions. Valentine sees a day when there will not be enough plumbers and A/C technicians.
“So we started a school called John Moore Tech to address the problem. It opened Jan. 4, 2016, and focuses on plumbing, heating and air conditioning,” Valentine said.
“I’m not aware of any other multi-trade accredited school in greater Houston. Certainly not one that is affiliated with a trades company,” Valentine said.
Valentine is now 68 years old and clearly thrives on making the next improvement in his business that will keep it on the cutting edge of the home services industry. Working with manufacturers, he’s helped develop hot water heaters and air conditioning systems that are guaranteed to last a lifetime.
“I like the pressure of it, and I’m really enjoying the opportunity to innovate,” Valentine said.
“My dad said the minute you stop growing you start dying.” Judging by what’s happening at John Moore Services, there’s still plenty of life ahead.
