BROOKSHIRE, Texas (Covering Katy News) — Local Goya Foods employees and volunteers joined their fellow Goya Foods coworkers Tuesday in Goya Gives Day, a nationwide day of giving that provides one million pounds of food to individuals and families across the United States, Puerto Rico and Spain.
The event's date, the 90th day of the year, commemorates nine decades of nourishing families while reaffirming the company's long-standing commitment to fighting food insecurity, company officials said.
According to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, about 47 million Americans live in food-insecure households, and about 13.5% of U.S. households experience food insecurity at some point during the year, underscoring the growing need for community-based food assistance and corporate giving initiatives.
"For 90 years, Goya has been more than a food company — we are a family committed to serving other families," Goya Foods President Peter Unanue said. "Goya Gives Day represents our gratitude to the communities that have embraced us for nearly a century. Donating one million pounds of food on the 90th day of our 90th year is not only symbolic — it is a reflection of our ongoing promise to stand with those in need and to continue making a meaningful difference."
Goya Foods, founded in 1936, is today the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the United States. For more information, visit the Goya Gives website.
Who we are: Covering Katy News is independently owned and operated by professional journalists with more than 50 years of combined experience. Unlike many other local media outlets, we do not accept special purpose district funding — such as from MUDs, drainage districts or other taxing entities — nor do we accept funding from any government source, whether municipal, county, state or federal. We are self-sustaining — no outside investors — supported entirely by local advertisers. Our owner and publisher, Dennis Spellman, and his staff live locally, so we understand local issues. Since 2022, Spellman has also served county residents in a communications role for Fort Bend County Pct. 3. Since our founding in 2011, our editorial decisions have been made independently — and that will never change.
