YMCA Operation Backpack tops it’s goal of serving 120,000 children

HOUSTON (Covering Katy News) – The YMCA’s Operation Backpack had a big goal of serving 120,000 children through its annual school supplies drive it’s exceed expectations.

“Thanks to those who worked tirelessly to make happen, nearly 128,000 children have the school supplies needed to start the year off right,” said a press release from the YMCA.

The drive took place at all of the Greater Houston YMCA locations including the two Katy locations.

“YMCA of Greater Houston takes great pride in sharing this success with the community,” said VP of Marketing & Communication Omoiye Kinney, “Our goal of serving 120,000 seemed ambitious, but the generosity of Houstonians was bigger.”

YMCA Operation Backpack, one of the largest back-to-school supply drives in Texas, has been a year over year success as part of YMCA of Greater Houston’s commitment to improving academic achievement. Last year, YMCA Operation Backpack delivered backpacks and school supplies to more than 115,000 children.

Partners of YMCA Operation Backpack are ABC13/KTRK-TV, 89.3 KSBJ and H-E-B. Sponsors include The Home Depot, Kidde, CITGO, The UPS Store Houston locations and Ashley HomeStore.
