Suspected Drunk Driver Kills Man on Katy Freeway

KATY (Covering Katy News) – A man who ran out of gas on the Katy Freeway feeder road near Barker Cypress Road is dead after being struck by a suspected drunk driver as he refueled his vehicle. The crash happened at about 9 p.m. Friday.

“The driver of the silver Chevy Impala had run out of gas. He contacted his wife who brought him a can of gasoline, said Houston Police Department Sergeant Robert Klementich. That’s when a Chevy Tahoe struck the Impala and the man who was refilling his tank.

“The driver of the Chevy Impala, who was refueling his vehicle, was then propelled through the air about 20 feet and hit the ground,” Klementich said.

Klementich said the suspected drunk driver crossed two lanes of traffic before colliding with the Impala which was parked in the far right travel lane. The impact of the crash drove the victim’s car into his wife’s sedan creating a three-vehicle accident.

The man died at the hospital. His wife witnessed the incident and became extremely distraught.

“She was experiencing a possible medical situation, so she was also transported to the hospital for observation,” Klementich said.

The driver of the Tahoe failed a field sobriety test and was taken by police officers for additional testing. Intoxication manslaughter charges are pending.
