KATY (Covering Katy News) – The Katy Independent School District Police Department is investigating an allegation that a 5-year-old kindergarten student at Bethke Elementary School was molested by another student on a school bus. The incident is said to have happened last week on Thursday, Nov. 30.
“Thank God the bus has a safety camera and it was caught on tape,” said a relative of the kindergarten student.
The relative was concerned that all Bethke parents did not receive notification about the incident on Friday. She also feels that the girl’s mother would not have been told except that she knows the person who was driving the school bus.
“She had to go up to the school and demand to speak with someone,” the relative said.
On Monday, a letter was emailed to parents by principal Carrie Lowery, but it did not say there was an allegation that a student had been molested by another student.
Katy ISD and the girl’s family both say that the bus driver did the right thing by immediately reporting the incident to administrators. Katy ISD Police launched an investigation after the incident was reported.
“Please be assured our school and district take allegations involving students very seriously and will fully investigate any new information should more be presented,” Lowery wrote to parents. “Also, in these types of situations, parents of students who may have witnessed, or been directly impacted by an alleged incident are contacted by school administration,” she added.
Bethke Elementary School is located at 4535 E. Ventana Parkway, Katy, TX 77493, which is near Stockdick School Road and Peek Road.
Principal Lowery’s letter to parents is below:
December 4, 2017
Dear Bethke Parents/Guardians and staff,
I recently received some inquiries from parents who have expressed concern about an incident involving two students that occurred on a Katy ISD school bus serving the Bethke area last week. Please know that school administration and the Katy ISD police thoroughly investigated the claims brought forth by the bus driver who made administration aware of the alleged incident.
Whereas state and federal laws prevent school districts from sharing personal and disciplinary information regarding individual students, the alleged incident has been addressed according to the Discipline Management Plan/ Student Code of Conduct and the Katy ISD Police Department.
Please be assured our school and district take allegations involving students very seriously and will fully investigate any new information should more be presented. Also, in these types of situations, parents of students who may have witnessed, or been directly impacted by an alleged incident are contacted by school administration.
Providing a safe and secure environment inside and outside our classrooms will always be our top priority, and we will do everything we can to ensure the safety of our students.
