KATY (Covering Katy News)  –  Operation Backpack is underway at every Houston area YMCA location including The Monty Ballard YMCA in Cinco Ranch and the Mark A. Chapman YMCA at Katy Main Street.  The event is designed to provide young students with the supplies they need to start the school year in August.

Operation Backpack kicked off in Katy on Tuesday, July 10.

DONATION INFORMATION

Required school supplies can cost up to $200 per student, and with more than 25 percent of Houston area children ages 17 and under living in poverty, many parents cannot afford to purchase the supplies needed. Now in its 14th year, YMCA Operation Backpack aims to reach its highest goal to date by distributing school supplies and new backpacks to 120,000 children in need from thirty-six school districts.

Getting the word out to donors is critical to the success of the initiative, and it’s easy to contribute right up to the last day of the drive, August 10:

  • Make a monetary donation or purchase pre-packaged school supplies and a backpack at any participating H-E-B at the checkout stand. Your donation will directly support your local YMCA.
  • Visit ymcaoperationbackpack.org to make a monetary donation.
  • Visit ymcaoperationbackback.org for a list of school supplies if you wish to purchase them individually. Supplies and backpacks can be dropped off at any YMCA or at designated sites specified on the YMCA website.

Partners of YMCA Operation Backpack are ABC13/KTRK-TV, 89.3 KSBJ, and H-E-B. Sponsors include The Home Depot, Kidde, CITGO, The UPS Store Houston locations and Ashley HomeStore.
