KATY (Covering Katy News) – The owner of a Cinco Ranch Which Wich sandwich shop is looking for volunteers to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for those in need.

“Which Wich has this project called Project PB&J,” said store owner Julio Chavez. “We donate PB&J sandwiches locally.”

Customers come to the store and purchase a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for $3. That sandwich and two more are donated to those in need. Two sandwiches are given away locally and a third is banked, and when the next disaster strikes it goes to people in need.

“During Hurricane Harvey, we gave away a lot of PB&J sandwiches,” Chavez told Covering Katy during an interview at his store in the Target Shopping Center on Westheimer Parkway.

Chavez not only sells the sandwiches, but he volunteers to make them at a large building on the Gulf Freeway in Houston. He needs more people to join his team of sandwich makers on Monday, Aug. 13, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

“We were going to do it here (at his shop in Katy), but it began to grow and grow, so we moved it to the Sysco warehouse at I-45 and Beltway 8,” Chavez said.

Volunteers will make the sandwiches and then distribute them on Monday. They hope to get 40 or more volunteers to make 5,000 sandwiches. Working with the non-profit Kids Meals Houston the sandwiches will be distributed to those in need. Kids’ Meals of Houston feeds 4,800 Houston-area kids every day.

“We believe a simple peanut butter and jelly sandwich can change the world,” the Which Wich website proclaims. “Project PB&J was started to bring comfort and comfort food to those in the world who need it; to let them know someone out there cares. From those affected by natural disasters to local organizations, Project PB&J is trying to bring a smile to the face of those in need and a meal to their belly.”
