KATY – (Covering Katy News) – Cancer survivors and their guests celebrated National Cancer Survivors Day at Methodist West Hospital in Katy on June 1, 2018. There were more than 100 people who attended. Also recognized were the many family members and friends who supported their loved ones along their survivorship journey. In attendance were members of the Houston Methodist West oncology team who were able to celebrate former and current patents. The oncology physicians also led the guests in a spirited line dancing session.
It was a western-themed Give Cancer the Boot event that featured a resource fair, survivor testimonials, live music, line dancing and a barbeque lunch.
“It is truly our honor and privilege to celebrate the strength and courage of cancer survivors,” said Kim Collins, director of the Houston Methodist Cancer Center at West. “We hope our event gives each of them a chance to recognize and reflect on their own strength and determination because they are truly such an inspiration.”
Anyone living with a personal history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life – is a cancer survivor, according to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation. Thanks to advances in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and follow-up care, more people than ever before are surviving the disease. Survivorship means ensuring that the patient knows the importance of follow-up doctor visits and living a healthy lifestyle, including diet and physical activity.
