A hiker from Katy who was lost in Big Bend National Park has been found. Edilberto “Beto” Lopez was hiking Emory Peak trail Saturday when he lost his way duirng a heavy thunderstorm.
“Lost hiker has been found!” exclaimed a post on the Big Bend National Park Facebook page.
“Mr. Lopez spent 2 unplanned nights in the backcountry where he took a wrong turn and then lost the trail after intense thunderstorms turned the path into a flowing creek,” the post said. “Eventually he found his way back to his route and searchers located him while hiking out.”
There were thirteen search personnel and the park’s plane assisting in the search. A Customs and Border Protection air and marine division helicopter was also utilized.

Lopez reportedly had an emergency blanket and flashlight. Park officials say that very likely made a big difference.
“We thank everyone who helped with the search and provide information and are overjoyed to close this incident with a happy ending,” the post said.
