CITY OF KATY (Covering Katy News) – A thirty-year-old woman from the City of Katy is facing charges of abandoning two children after a neighbor found her autistic child outside bleeding and a responding police officer found a second child alone inside her Derbyshire Lane home.
The court charging document says Melissa Gomez left her 1-year-old daughter and 4-year-old autistic son alone at her home off Katyland Drive, near Rhodes Stadium on Monday night, Oct. 30. The boy was found by a neighbor. The child was bleeding. He was outside crying, across the street from his house, at about 8:40 p.m.
A Katy Police officer was called to the scene in an attempt to determine the identity of the child and find a parent. That is when the second, one-year-old child was found inside the home, with no adult supervision. The second child was on the floor and was unresponsive when the officer tried to get her attention. The officer had to force his way into the locked house. He entered through a garage door.
The court document says Gomez was found by contacting her landlord. When contacted she told a Katy Police officer that she was in Spring and said it would take her about 40 minutes to return. She told the officer she left her kids alone to collect money that was owed to her.
According to KTRK TV, both children are now in the custody of Texas Child Protective Services.
