KATY (Covering Katy) – Veteran news reporter Jamie Mock is joining CoveringKaty.com and CoveringFortBend.com as a reporter and editor. Mock previously served as managing editor of the Examiner Newspaper group. She’s also worked for the Houston Community Newspapers, InstantNewsFortBend.com and FortBendNow.com.
“I have always had a passion for reporting local news and I am excited to be back in Fort Bend County,” said Mock.
“I’m thrilled to have Jamie as part of the team. She’s a seasoned journalist with local contacts who will hit the ground running,” said CoveringKaty.com and CoveringFortBend.com founder Dennis Spellman.
“Fort Bend is filled with wonderful communities that deserve to have a news outlet that meets the needs of residents in real time. I am proud to be a part of CoveringKaty.com and CoveringFortBend.com, which do exactly that,” Mock said.
Mock has deep connections in Fort Bend County and will be tasked with the growth of the recently launched CoveringFortBend.com. She will also create content for CoveringKaty.com and be an integral part of the daily editorial strategy sessions.
“I look forward to getting to know the communities again, and I encourage residents to reach out to me,” Jamie added. “If you have a concern about your neighborhood, know an exceptional resident that deserves the spotlight or just have a newsworthy story idea, please feel free to reach out to me at email@example.com,” Jamie said.
“Jamie also has digital news reporting skills, which are needed in a time when the vast majority of people are consuming their news on mobile phones rather than reading print publications,” Spellman added.
“Having Jamie as part of our team will allow me to spend more time growing the business side of delivering news 24-7,” Spellman said.
“What started as an experiment and a hunch has grown into an operation that can’t be run by just one guy and a few freelancers. It’s become overwhelming partially because there is no template for what we are doing,” Spellman added. “I’ve looked and can’t find a community news model that has the same ‘real news in real time’ mission of Covering Katy. We are literally pioneering this model. I believe Jamie will be a great asset in planning for our future. Jamie knows intuitively where Covering Katy is headed,” he said.
Mock also has management credentials beyond her accomplishments in the newsroom. She is the former owner of West U Connections, a magazine that serves the upscale Houston suburb of West University.
“The Katy area is now larger in population than Pittsburgh, which is ranked as media market number 23 (Houston is number 7). Covering Katy believes this area deserves to have a media operation that performs with the same precision and speed as a market that’s larger than Pittsburgh. Jamie will help us reach that goal,” Spellman said.
Mock begins her new duties Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016.
