KATY (Covering Katy News) –  A Katy store that provides funding for domestic violence and sexual assault victims held a celebration Wednesday morning. The Fort Bend Women’s Center’s new PennyWise store has been open for a few weeks, and the commemorative ribbon-cutting was held Wednesday by the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce.

“This is a huge part of our operation,” said Bruce Mercer, president of the Fort Bend Women’s Center’s board of directors. “Our retail stores provide 25 percent to one-third of our $8 million operating budget,” he added.

Items donated to PennyWise resale stores are either given directly to survivors and their families to help them start new lives, or are sold at the organization’s four retail stores to raise funds for the Women’s Center’s services.

“We help women who are the victims of domestic violence find a way out,” Mercer said.

The new Katy store is located at 323 S. Mason Rd., Katy, TX 77450, between Dollar Tree and Fiesta Mart, not far from the Katy Freeway.

“Katy is a great area for us. The community support has been great,” Mercer said.

The new PennyWise features a full inventory of furniture, housewares, home décor, and men’s, women’s and children’s clothing. There will also be a boutique area with hand-selected high-quality purses, footwear, prom dresses, cocktail dresses, bridal and other formal attire.

“I think it’s beautiful,” said a shopper named Caroline who had a cart full of items. “It’s stuff I couldn’t find anywhere else,” she added.

“Whether you are spring cleaning or bargain hunting, when you support our PennyWise stores, you are bringing healing and hope to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault,” says Vita Goodell, CEO of Fort Bend Women’s Center.

“The Katy community has been very generous to the Women’s Center over the past several years. We are excited that this new location will make shopping and donating even more convenient for Katy residents,” Goodell said.

A full list of PennyWise resale stores and donation center locations can be found at www.fbwc.org/pennywise. PennyWise offers a free donation pick-up service for larger items – to request a pickup, call 281-344-5777 or email pick-ups@fbwc.org.
