Katy to Host National Step Family Day Activities Saturday

KATY (Covering Katy)—Many businesses and activities are designed for families and to celebrate families. But not much, if anything, gets said, much less promoted, for blended families.

A local event scheduled for Saturday afternoon can help change that.

Local author Maria Ashworth has organized the National Step Family Day Celebration, which is scheduled from 12-2 p.m. Saturday at Katy Altitude Trampoline Park, 24952 Katy Ranch Road.

Tickets are $15 per person, and while the event itself ends at 2 p.m., attendees can continue jumping on trampolines until 7 p.m.

“It’s about building relationships with other blended families,” Ashworth said. “They’re the only ones who can understand the blending of families.”

One common situation that arises in blended families, Ashworth said, is when a child is asked or encouraged to bring his or her parent to an event. Which one do they bring—the step-parent with whom they live, or their biological parent? Or is it possible (or even advisable) to bring both the step-parent and biological parent?

“There are some things we can talk about,” Ashworth said. “You can get your families together and form relationships and friendships. You’ll find you have a lot in common that way.”

Ashworth can speak from experience about the challenges of blending families. She and her husband, David, both have children from previous marriages. Earlier this year, Ashworth wrote and released “Step One, Step Two, Step Three and Four,” a 32-page book, targeted at readers ages 4-8, that focuses on a young girl who becomes part of a blended family when her mother marries a man with four sons from his previous marriage.

On Saturday, attendees can enjoy the array of trampolines, as well as pizza, cake and a photo booth. The American Ninja Warrior (Artis Thompson III) and the Katy Tigers mascot will to make appearances.

Each attendee will also receive a bag with coupons and other small items from local businesses, along with a copy of Ashworth’s book, “Step One, Step Two, Step Three and Four.” There will also be drawings and a contest for the top step-parent of the year.
