CITY OF KATY – Katy Police say one man was shot dead by his brother after threatening his mother with a sledgehammer early Monday morning, June 11, 2018.

Katy police were called to the home at 5300 block of 11th Street at 12:40 a.m.

“There was a domestic disturbance between a son and his mother,” said Assistant Police Chief Tim Tyler. “He picked up a small sledgehammer and was threatening her.”

Clifton Achterberg, 34, was shot in the back by his 31-year-old brother Walter Achterberg who saw the altercation according to Tyler. Walter was defending his mother.

The bullet went through Clifton’s back, came out through the chest and hit the mother in the left arm according to Tyler. The mother was treated by Katy EMS at the scene and she is expected to recover.

No charges have been filed against the Walter Achterberg but his legal jeopardy is not over yet.

“Due to the circumstances, the district attorney will refer this case to the grand jury,” Tyler said.

The brothers and the mother all live at the home where the shooting happened, and the Katy Police are familiar with them.

“We’ve dealt with this family before,” Tyler said.

The family has had domestic disturbances and disputes with their neighbors according to Tyler.

“It’s a sad deal,” Tyler said.
