KATY (Covering Katy) – Mattress Firm is closing 700 stores nationwide as part of its bankruptcy reorganization plan. Three of them will be in the Katy area. That means there will be job losses for employees and rental losses for owners of local strip malls.

The Katy area stores to be closed are located at 1266 Fry Road, 349 S. Mason Road, and 1443 S. Mason Road. They will be closed within the next 200 days as part of the company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan.

The store that’s located at 1443 South Mason Road is located in a strip mall that has only 4 stores. Cape Cod Express, a lobster restaurant, was also located at the same address but it recently closed. That means 5o percent of the tenants have either closed or will be closing.

In its Federal Bankruptcy Court filing, the nation’s largest Mattress retailer said it will not conduct the typical liquidation sales, it will simply transfer inventory to other stores, warehouses or distribution centers.

Over the past several years the chain has seen massive growth but some say the company grew too quickly. It has about 10,000 employees, 3,200 stores and an additional 125 franchised locations.

The company expects to stay in business with a new and smaller business footprint.
