KATY, Texas (Covering Katy News) — Katy Independent School District is celebrating its 2025-26 districtwide Teachers of the Year, recognizing educators who inspire students and set standards for excellence across the district.
Leonard Elementary's Quarde D. Alfred has been named Elementary Teacher of the Year. Katy Junior High's Jessica Melancon earned Secondary Teacher of the Year honors. For the first time, the district named two Elementary Rookie Teachers of the Year — Griffin Elementary's Victoria Stornello and Faldyn Elementary's Porchea Butler. Freeman High School's Blake Kane is the Secondary Rookie Teacher of the Year.
"These educators represent the very best of Katy ISD," said Superintendent Ken Gregorski. "They inspire students, lead with purpose and elevate the profession through their passion and commitment. Their impact reaches far beyond the classroom, shaping the future of our students and community."
Each honoree advanced through multiple rounds of evaluation to represent their campus and the district. They will now compete for national recognition among Region 4's top teachers.
What their principals are saying:
"Quarde Alfred has utilized his non-traditional background to foster a classroom culture defined by mutual respect, humility and the belief that every child can and will learn. His greatest strength is his ability to connect with at-risk students, using his own experiences to mentor and inspire beyond the classroom." — Jason Sowders, Leonard Elementary principal
"Within Jessica Melancon's first few months, she revitalized the choir booster club, raising more than $12,000 to support student opportunities and program needs, including new uniforms for all choir students. She has expanded performance opportunities and rebuilt a culture rooted in high expectations, engagement and joy." — Carrie Lowery, Katy Junior High principal
"Victoria Stornello sets the standard for collegiality, hard work and dedication. She builds strong relationships with students and staff while fully engaging in campus culture, from classroom collaboration to after-hours events and house rallies." — Jacki Keithan, Griffin Elementary principal
"Throughout her transition from first to third grade, Porchea Butler quickly built strong relationships with students, parents and colleagues while maintaining a calm, student-centered classroom. Her recognition as Katy Teach ACP Teacher of the Month reflects her commitment to growth and excellence." — Kathryn Leeper, Faldyn Elementary principal
"Blake Kane consistently exceeds expectations through his involvement, teamwork and commitment to supporting students and staff. From the start of his career, he has embraced the role of educator as one that extends far beyond the classroom." — Gina Cobb, Freeman High School principal
Katy ISD will honor all campus and district Teachers of the Year at its annual "Of the Year" ceremony April 16.
