Driver flees after striking and killing bicycle rider in Katy

Elrod Road early Tuesday morning.

KATY-HARRIS COUNTY (Covering Katy News) – A woman was killed while riding her bicycle along Elrod Road in Katy-Harris County at about midnight Monday night. The victim was hit by a pickup truck and its driver fled the scene.  If caught, the driver faces a failure to stop and render aid charge.

“A female was operating a bicycle southbound on Elrod when a dark-colored pickup truck, possibly a Dodge Ram, was also traveling southbound on Elrod. The female was struck by the Dodge Ram,” said Deputy Simon Cheng of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division.

Cheng said detectives have a general description of the pickup truck because they reviewed surveillance video from a nearby gas station.

Elrod Road has no streetlights and there is no breakdown lane where the cyclist was struck. Cheng says it’s possible that the driver never saw the victim.

The name of the victim has not yet been released but she’s described as a black female in her late 30s or early 40s.

Anyone with information should call the Harris County Sherriff’s office at 713-274-7400.
