KATY (Covering Katy) – A single lightning strike killed ten head of cattle owned by Brett Mitchell of Katy, according to a report on KHOU.com.  The incident happened on the morning of July 4th at Bar M Ranch in Jewett.

Mitchell believes he lost about $20,000 worth of cattle according to the report. He believes lightning struck a tree and killed everything within 20 feet.

Four cows with one calf each; a steer and a heifer died due to the lightning strike, he said.

“They were killed instantly. It’s one thing to deal with maybe one cow, but to be overwhelmed with so many it was pretty hard,” he told KHOU.

What softened the blow has been the response from the cattle and breeding community. They have been very helpful.
